up, we will talk to the top democratic leader in the state of california who's attending tonight's event. that's attorney general harris in chicago. ken prichard, channel 2 news. >>> getting results from back east. ken and heather are watching those with the latest returns. >> we have fight -- five states that brings mitt romney 3 electoral votes. indiana went to president obama four years but not this time, mitt romney has been declared the winner of indiana, 55 to 45%. take a look at kentucky, another win for mitt romney, 59 to 41%. again, no surprises here. these are states that didn't turn out any differently than projected. >> let's take another look at another state and that is the state of west virginia, you can see with the five electoral votes going to mitt romney. if you look here, you can see south carolina went to mitt romney. no big surprises. we want to take to you vermont that went to president obama. that too was expected. if you take a look at the map where we are focusing on is ohio. mitt romney capturing the neighboring states. a key battleground state, contin

. california's 55 electoral votes obviously helped put president obama back in the white house for another four years. in florida, one of the key swing states, there were long lines at a lot of polling places that stretched well into the evening. observers say high voter turn out, long ballots 11 pages in some counties and some minor computer glitches contributed to long waits. we heard reports in some cases this is amazing of three hour waits in some spots during the lunch hour. and as of now, florida is still too close to call. >> for weeks the polls have pointed to a very tight presidential race coming down to a few key states. >> ken wayne and heather -- [captioner transition. >>> the winner with a lot fewer than 98% of the votes. and the reason for that was most of the gop strong holds in ohio had been counted and still a large number of votes in the subsqushs and northern ohio, the big cities where there are strong democrat there. so more democrat and that's why ohio was kaldz even though we didn't a 100% of the vote counseled. . >> we do have some more swing states to look at. new hampsh

's election day. and the polls here in california just opened about 55 second ago. the months of campaigning the millions of dollars spent on ads comes down to this day. the presidential race remains a dead heat with the latest poll showing president obama and mitt romney still neck in neck in the all important battleground states. mitt romney voted this morning near his boston area home with his wife. romney is now heading to ohio and then pennsylvania where he is making last-minute campaign appearances. this was just announced yesterday before heading back to boston this evening. president obama is back home in chicago where he will watch the results come in later this evening. coming up at 7:15, we will have a guide to the key returns today and when we could know the results of the presidential election. >> time 7:01 you heard tori the polls opened moments ago here in california. we have reporters all over the bay area covering today's local, state and national issues. you see the reporters there tara and everybody else we will start with ktvu's at polling place in san jose good morning.

the california air national guard got to the east coast last week following hurricane sandy, they were met with a rude reality. what happened to the local national guard troops who heeded the call of hurricane sandy? >> reporter: there is still a lot of activity going on here at moffett field today as the local air national guard unit gets ready for the next emergency situation. after returning from a hurricane sandy mission that in a sense never got off the ground. workers for the california air national guard 129th rescue wing are making sure its helicopters are ready for the next time. the helicopters were loaded on to a transport plane and along with about 100 airmen headed out to the east coast for possible rescue operations for then hurricane sandy. today some said they were ready for anything. >> swift water rescue to picking people off of house tops with the helicopters, providing medical care, whatever we need to do, we'll be ready to do it. >> reporter: but it didn't happen. the 129th commander says the national guard called for assistance on a nationwide basis as sandy picked up
